Activities 1
Personal, Social and Emotional Development Activity
Look at family photographs together, this a is a lovely way to connect with your child, especially when they may not be able to see people in person. It is also a way of discussing other concepts.
Talk about:
- What people are wearing? Names of items of clothing, colours, etc
- Where people are in the picture? Positional language; next to, in front, behind
- What people are doing? Verbs; sitting, standing, running, smiling etc
- Why were we together? Special events and celebrations to enhance your child's knowledge and understanding of the world.
Communication and Language Activity
Understanding 'beginning' and 'end' is an important concept for reading, writing and maths. Play going on the bus or shop and use toys and teddies to make a queue.
Talk about:
- Who is at the beginning of the line/queue?
- Who is at the end?
- Putting items in the line e.g. Can you put teddy at the beginning of the line? Can you put dog at the end?
- Where items are in the line? Where is baby?
Step up
If your child is comfortable with the words and concepts then add 'middle'.
Step down
If your child is struggling then start with 'first'.
Physical Development Activity
Fine Motor Skills - Fingers and Hands
Encourage your child to help prepare their own meals. Spreading butter and jam for sandwiches and cutting bread are excellent ways of children developing their fine motor skills. Also encourage them to grate, this encourages children to develop a dominant hand, as one hand moves while the other stays still. This will help with writing when they are ready for it.
Gross Motor Skills - Arms and Legs
Play Simon Says.
Simon says run on the spot, Simon says skip around the room, Simon says jump into the air. Sit Down.
This is a fun way of getting children moving, the rules are simple, if Simon says it they do it, if he doesn't they don't have to do it. However, the rules are not as important as the fun actions which will get their muscles moving, hearts pumping and use up some energy!
